DAY 18: Think Quality And Not Quantity

smallerplatesWe’re taught at an early age that more is better. That’s seldom true and especially when it comes to food. When it comes to eating, think quality, not quantity. Don’t eat to fill your stomach; eat to fuel your body. The body needs better ingredients not more significant portions.

If you eat out on a regular basis, consider portion size. Eat half a portion and get a take-home container for the leftovers. If the menu provides a nutritional count, determine how much of the portion you’ll eat before it is plated before you. Just because it is on your plate doesn’t mean you have to eat it. Portion control is key to a healthier lifestyle.

I go by this rule. If it’s cheap and comes in a large portion, it is probably not good for you. Cheaper prepared foods on the shelf and off the menu are filled with calories, fat, and a less than wholesome nutritional values.

I’ve noticed healthier selections are typically pricier. But, if you buy with portion control in mind, you can manage purchases to fit the budget. Purchase according to serving size and quality.

For me, two practices have helped me over the past several years. First, I learned to right-size my portions. I had to change my mindset to eat for nutrition rather than being full. Second, I changed the size of the plate I used at the house. We typically use a luncheon sized plate rather than a dinner plate for meals at home. The lunch plate is smaller; therefore, you’re forced to dish up a smaller portion. Whatever works 🙂
