DAY 9: SKIP THE BUFFET

buffet-lineWhen we lived in Tampa, there was a favorite buffet spot not far from the church. On occasion, we’d have a breakfast meeting there. It was close; people could get what they wanted. I remember a conversation I had with an employee one day. It seems they were struggling with customers who would come in for the all you could eat breakfast and stay to take advantage of the lunch buffet too for the same price. My first reaction was that’s pretty cheap of folks. My second reaction was how someone could eat that much food?

Buffets, in general, aren’t your friend. Typically, it’s hard to make good choices with the available options and it’s hard to control your portions. It doesn’t matter if it’s Chinese, pizza or American food. You convince yourself the plates are small, so it’s perfectly fine to take a second and third trip. And, then there’s the desert. It’s just tough to pass on the stuff you shouldn’t have when it’s right there in front of you – just a heaping spoonful away.

It’s rare for me to visit a buffet restaurant. I know it’s easier for me to eat well if I’m ordering off a menu. Additionally, portion sizes are typically smaller off a menu than what I’d usually scoop off the buffet. I guess the lesson here is to put yourself in the best location to make better choices for a healthier you.
