DAY 3: Sub Sugar

sugarpackets copyThere are few no-good-friends in life, but sugar is one of them. The negatives are well documented. (I’m not really an Atkins guy, but it’s a link to useful information). Describing the faults of sugar isn’t my intention. My goal is to help you think creatively about different ways to eat less of it. It’s nearly impossible to erase sugar from one’s diet, but you can certainly eat less. Make sugar the exception rather than the rule.

Sugar is plentiful in prepared foods. We also add it to our drinks and recipes. Find out where the sugar is in your diet and determine to eat less. Probably the easy example is coffee. With a sugar packet and syrup pump, you change a relatively low-calorie/low sugar drink to a high-calorie/high sugar beverage – an unhealthy concoction. With your next cup of coffee, try drinking it black. See how your tastebuds adjust. If you’re okay without the sugar, drink up. If you can’t get past the less than sweet taste, try a healthy non-sugar substitute. Start with a small amount and see how it tastes. Believe it or not, by minimizing sugar, you will reduce your calorie intake and your waistline. You’ll feel better too.
