Can you ever truly buy freedom? I guess not. The United States invested hundreds of billions of dollars in Iraq. This past week, the leading Shiite Iraqi Islamic cleric (Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani) is calling on the United Nations to criminalize insults against the Prophet Mohammed. Really? I haven’t heard too many Christian leaders running to the United Nations asking to criminalize insults against Jesus. But, that’s the difference between Jesus and Mohammed. Jesus willingly bore the insults of men. He bore my shame that I may know righteousness. My tax dollars – as did yours – went to pay for this man’s freedom and now he wants to limit my “religious” freedom. His recent call is a response in part to the anti-Islam film blamed on America. I guess Islamic leaders in Iraq still have something to learn about freedom – religious freedom. It’s worth considering.
