So You Want to Lose Weight…

Want to lose weight once and for allSo, you want to lose some weight?  That’s a noble intention! Know the secret? You plan for success. Good intentions matter not; it’s the follow through that counts. Every plan begins with a first step.

What’s the first step to a healthier self? Take some time to learn nutrition basics. Did you know that a flat stomach begins in the kitchen and not the gym? What you eat is primary to success while exercise is secondary. Exercise reinforces a healthier nutrition plan. People often make a huge mistake in the battle to lose weight with the mindset you exercise to compensate for an unhealthy diet. Here’s my motto, “You eat to exercise; you don’t exercise to eat.” Eat to give your body the nutrition it needs to perform. If you exercise to eat, it is nearly impossible to make a healthier weight. I’ve heard so many people say they exercise so they can eat whatever they want. Unfortunately, with that mentality you’ll end up another frustrated overweight gym member.

Talk to a nutritionist, dietician, trainer or medial doctor about your eating plan. Make sure you’re eating a combination of proteins, fats and carbs; you need all three. And, please, don’t starve yourself with a minimal caloric intake. If you try to starve your body, it is going to react in a negative way. Vary your foods; plan for variety. Use apps like MyFitnessPal to help you keep track and plan your eating. You’ll be amazed at the results after 90 days. Oh, and be sure to take a before picture. You’ll want to compare with an after picture. It’s not vanity, but assists you with the mental image of your new self.

I’ve come to understand weight loss is as much a spiritual battle as it is a physical battle. It’s about better choices, stewardship, perseverance, strength and habits.  You’ll need help to succeed like the accountability of a friend, the support of a spouse and strength beyond self from God. Having lost weight last year, I know success is possible for anyone that wants change. Take the first step.
