As I Prepare for the National Day of Prayer

person-pew

The National Day of Prayer is just around the corner. It is the first Thursday in May.

How can I make the day personally meaningful?  Here’s what I’m proposing.

As I join with others in praying…

May I pray from a posture of humility. Let me throw off any hint of self-righteous thoughts, phrases, language or words as I seek you Lord.

May I pray from a place of brokenness. Don’t let me forget my own brokenness as I intercede for the broken around me.

May I pray from a heart of gratitude and thanksgiving. Lord, don’t let me forget your goodness.

May I pray from a compassionate heart. Without compassion, I can’t know your humility, without humility, I cannot know your compassion. Jesus, let me see others the way you see them.

May I pray with a sense of mission. Don’t let me forget that I’m sent into my community. May I realize that as I’m praying for you to change my community (and nation), I’m asking you to change me.

Which leads me to the last item. This year’s theme is Wake Up America. Personally, I think that we as Christ followers (and the churches we make up) really need to wake up first. Why would God wake up a nation to a sleepy church? May we wake up to live missionally in our communities as we give people a reason to hope and connect.

Amen.

    Reflecting on this. So good.
