An Example of Affirmation and a Challenge to Communicators

encouragement-trudy-wilkersonWords of affirmation are sweet. It’s one of the habits (spiritual disciplines) I discussed last Sunday that often yields a great result. It’s a vital practice in the domain of community (one of the places where God seems to form us the most).

I want to share with you an impromptu conversation following one of the services last Sunday. A young dad stopped to offer words of affirmation. He shared about his father’s passing at an early age from a preventable illness. He and his wife observed my physical transformation this past summer. In so many words, he affirmed me in my efforts and appreciated I was making strives to be there for my family.

The second part of the discussion was something I already knew, but hearing it verbalized made a huge impact. He stated the visible evidence of my personal discipline gave credibility to what I was communicating on the platform each week. In other words, discipline’s practice in my life made the message more convincing. Wow! You can’t ignore that observation. I thanked him for sharing and for the words of affirmation.

Now, I share this encounter not to illicit additional comments of encouragement this coming week, but for two reasons. This is an example of the habit of affirmation being practiced in a real life scenario and I could not pass up the illustration. But also, I think it’s a challenge to those called to communicate. Many in my vocation are physically unhealthy. Could it be that an undisciplined life obstructs the message? We want to be convincing, but perhaps our appearance (reflection of our lifestyle) creates doubt before the first word is spoken. Are you struggling here? Let me encourage you to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Choosing to journey a healthier path demonstrates commitment, discipline and perseverance – these are all good traits of a follower’s faith. I realize the choice to become healthy is personal one. No one can shame you or convince you of such – it’s your choice. But, hear the voice of that young dad – it gives credibility to your message.
