A Message to Pastors and Clergy

7071tempThis is a message to pastors – to other clergy. It’s a sensitive topic spoken from one minister to another. You may take offense, but the ball is in your court. It’s your decision and nothing will happen until you make the decision and take the first step.

For years I’ve heard the woes of clergy obesity. It’s a problem and needs a viable solution. Our job is stressful; we deal with people in all walks and seasons of life. Ministers live in the tension created by managing and leading. We’re over scheduled and over committed. It’s all too easy to let things go until our body appeals for help.

The mission of the NFL play 60 is to make the next generation of youth the most active and healthy. They’re attempting to combat childhood obesity with intentional healthy activity. We need a mission for healthy pastors. Maybe the goal is healthier clergy or maybe to eliminate obesity in our pulpits over the next decade.

To be frank, obese clergy have lost credibility. They’re unable to teach with authority certain topics and subjects found in Scripture.  All this comes from a guy who has lost some weight by practicing healthier eating and exercise habits. You can do this and regain lost territory and ground. Take the first step; it is up to you. No one can do it for you or make you do it. This is for a healthier you and for greater influence.

Here are a few simple first step ideas. I blogged about additional first steps in another post here.

  • Visit with your medical doctor about your proposed new goal
  • Enroll in a fitness or gym membership
  • Enlist a trainer (yes, it costs money, but it’s money well spent)
  • Enlist a dietician (to learn the truth about foods)
  • Calendar your exercise and don’t miss
  • Establish small achievable goals and celebrate when they’re met
  • Have a workout partner (friend or spouse) to encourage you and hold you accountable
