I’d Really Like to Hear Some “Good” Stories!

800px-WHIO-TV_News_Set_Kettering_OH_USAI’d really like to hear some “good” stories from our news reporters. Why can’t we have some value added reporting? Seems these days the only stories that make it to the news desk are ones of violence and tragedy.

There are good things happening in my community. Why can’t these be told? Wouldn’t you like to hear a story of encouragement? Don’t we need more stories that build?  Instead we hear about gunshots, murders and horrific events. I think the world might be a kinder gentler place if the better stories of generosity, encouragement and accomplishment were told with greater frequency.

Could the daily violence reported by our local news agencies actually encourage violence? You can’t help but be influenced by stories you hear. Perhaps the reporting of violence is actually promoting or fostering violent behavior in our community; violence begets violence.

Scripture encourages us to think about the better nobler things. I think God said that for a reason. We need to fill our minds with better thoughts – the stuff that encourages, builds and helps. I’ve recently quit watching so much network and cable news. I’m more selective about what I watch and read in the day’s news.

I have a request of the local news outlets. Please tell more stories that encourage us to be better people, to make a difference right where we are, to think kinder thoughts and to help others around us. You have the power to inform and inspire. Oh, please inspire!

Prior to 2008, I didn’t pay attention to the news above the local level. Ignorance was bliss. With Mr. Obama’s run for the Presidency, I began to pay attention…to everything! I went from nothing to couldn’t-get-enough!

Now, I listen to 88.1 (Christian talk radio…AFR) most of the day and catch Fox morning, noon and night. Today as I was listening, I burst into tears with a feeling of extreme sadness for believers being driven out by the Islamic State (ISIS, IS, or whatever they call themselves today) militants/terrorists. A little later, I burst into tears at the battles we, as Christians, are fighting in courts for our first amendment rights…here in America!

Each time I think I need to turn off the talking heads and their rhetoric, I remember how ignorant I was pre-2008. It’s because of people like me that our country is in the state it’s in now! With that thought, I’m compelled to keep on listening to make wise decisions in voting. But maybe you are right, Brad, about the constant negativity. It sure would be nice to have some positive sprinkled in with the negative!

I’m going to re-connect with GBTV again! Glen at least gave some encouragement!

      Darlene,

Thank you for the comment. You’re right regarding the need to stay informed – that’s important. While I continue to stay informed, I choose to filter my media outlets and even censor to some degree the stories I’ll listen to regardless of network. I wish our media would share more of what’s happening that is positive amidst all the challenging, difficult stories of our day and time. I’m personally tired of the relentless reporting of the senseless violence for the sake of sensationalizing the news and the constant strive for ratings. Alright, I’ll get down from my soap box for now 🙂
