This is one of my favorite Christmas hymns. Little is known of its origin though The First Noel is thought to have started in France sometime during the 15th century. The song is said to have crossed to England just prior to 1823. The word Noel from its latin root of the original French word means “birthday.” When we sing of The First Noel, we sing of the first birthday – the coming of the Christ.
I like the music in this rendition though it’s only a couple of stanzas from the carol. I’ve copied the lyrics here. The most powerful stanza is the sixth (last).

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
